8 Reasons Why I Love Being an Administrative Professional

When I was in high school, trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I told my parents that I wanted to go to school to learn about horses.  At the time, many years ago, the equine industry wasn’t very lucrative; there weren’t many jobs available and none of them paid a living wage.  My Dad was against this idea, saying that I should go to school for something else that could actually make a living.  So I decided to attend Cazenovia College, which had a good equine school, as well as a very good Secretarial Studies program.  I was able to get my degree in Secretarial Studies, with a minor in Equine Studies, Stable and Farm Management.

Since graduating college, I have worked consistently in the administrative professional field, starting out as a receptionist and working my way up to Executive Assistant.  Throughout my years of working, I have come to love this profession and treasure the skills I have learned.

Here are 8 reasons why I love being an Administrative Professional:

  1. I get to meet and work with a very diverse group of people, both internally and externally.
  2. I am able to assist others by taking tasks off their plate, enabling them to work more efficiently.
  3. Members of the public, customers, and vendors know they can come to me with questions, complaints or issues, and they will be resolved or passed on to the appropriate person.
  4. I’m able to work on the computer all day, keeping up to date with technology.
  5. I never know what I am going to be doing from day to day, even if I write a to do list. There is such a variety of tasks that I am able to do, which makes life very interesting and unpredictable.
  6. I am able to help others learn and grow by teaching them different tricks and tips that will save them time.
  7. Every industry needs administrative professionals, giving me the chance to work anywhere. I have worked in the Foster Care system, and in an Engineering Division of a municipal government.
  8. I am able to learn new skills, and use those skills to help others with different problems.

Though I still love horses, my job path as an administrative professional has been the right one for me.  It is very rewarding, especially when I am working with a great team of people and there is open communication between me and my immediate supervisor.  I would not trade this profession for anything else.
